AUM (pronounced as OM) is the supreme mantra and now the supreme quality handicraft items. Five persons – one lady and four young men united to initiate Auro Udyog Mitra in the year 1987. None of them had any practical knowledge of running a business or they were from business community. Gradually, three young men retired from auro Udyog Mitra due to their pre-occupations. Auro Udyog Mitra founded with only one artisan making glowball lampshades in a very small rented place in Pondicherry. In 1989, we stepped out of Pondicherry with our two patrons-Aavishkar in Calcutta and Aesthetics in Chennai; now we have our patrons across length and breadth of India-from Amritsar to Trivandrum and Ahmedabad to Gangtok. We provide continuous employment, through out the year, to the rural ladies at three different locations - Vazhaikulam (it is in Pondicherry city), Periakalapet (a village 12Km away from Pondicherry); the latter place was affected by the devastating waves of Tsunami on 26th December 2004. We suffered a partial damage, but unfortunately we were not able to get any aid from any quarters.The third unit is about 3Km away from Pondicherry city (Karuvadikuppam). And to keep the momentum of regular work, we had to diversify into many products - right from a small wooden body massage set to large sleeping hammocks. Our Hammocks, Lampshades and Candles are being exported through different exporters. By passage of time, we have developed many items, different designs,product-multitude. We are in a continuous pursuit of perfection in our products with an idea to reach out Pondicherry's crafts to India and abroad at very competitive prices; to reach even to the common man with a taste for crafts, so that handicrafts are no more a rich man's choice. Our social commitment remains firm-we employ rural ladies who are economically weaker- no child labour is employed by us. We are the pioneers who brought out the crafts making glowball lampshades and cotton corded hammocks out of Auroville where the foreigners were having exclusive monopoly in these products and we are proud of our achievement despite all odds; subsequently we have diversified in allied crafts line like making of Japanese type flower ornamented lanterns, aurovakra – the bendable dolls, balanced bird mobiles, flower decorated wooden trays and coasters and acupressure items. Our products are nature-friendly, all are bio-degradable, thus keeping our planet Earth, Green. Mission We want to provide uninterrupted source of income to the illiterate economically backward women. We pledge to support needy children for their education when our financial ability permits.
